Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1757-1814) published Paul et Virginie in 1788. The work is set in Mauritius (then Ile de France). This is number 64 of a limited edition of 250 copies illustrated by Hugues de Jouvancourt. There are 12 full page lithographs, 11 of which are signed in pencil by the artist. There are also head and tail pieces and decorated initial letters. The edition was originally presented as a portfolio of loose sheets; this copy though, while retaining the originial illustrated card portfolio covers has been bound into a further cover (thick grey cardboard with buckram spine). Also bound in is the original prospectus. Previous owner's name on half title. Contents are fine. French text.
