By a Person of Quality a Native of France (preface signed "De Souligne, Grandson to Monsieur Du Plessis Mornay). Du Plessis Mornay was the famous Huguenot advisor of Henry of Navarre playing a prominent part in the French Wars of Religion. De Souligne was a refugee after the Edict of Nantes when Louis XVI proscribed Protestantism in France and thus lost the country some of its most economically active inhabitants. The work is dedicated to William III's Chancellor of the Exchequer and this copy bears the book plate of "Thomas Foley of Great Witley Court in the County of Worcester". Foley was MP for Worcester and the son of a prominent iron master. Recased in half leather over marbled boards with new endpapers: pp xiv including title page with book plate verso, 280. A crisp clean copy of this interesting but scarce work.
