There is discolouration along the plastic spiral binder. The plates are clean and suitable for framing.

The calf spine of vol I has been replaced with matching modern calf incorporating the orginal labels. Volume I has an engraved portrait of Boswell after Reynolds which has offset onto the title page and is stained across the corners. There are two folding facsimiles. Despite some minor foxing contents are generally bright and clean. the marbled boards are rubbed with loss of surface. Hinges have been reinforced internally using paper matching the endpapers.
